Make Messes

If you don’t have a subscription to Willow and Sage, Home Bath & Body Magazine run to your nearest Jo-Ann’s Fabrics & Crafts store. Today we wanted a Sunday Funday project, and I will be sharing how you too can make your own handmade soaps at home! There are so many different ways, and it is fun to be creative. We used the goat milk recipe with cranberries, but decided to have a little fun and incorporate our sweet tooth and sub some of the ingredients for chocolate as well!

The ingredients to make the Oatmeal Cranberries Goat’s Milk Soap is as follows:

  • Small Bowl
  • 1/4 Cups Oats
  • 4 Table Spoons of Cranberries
  • 1 tsp. of cinnamon
  • Soap mold: silicone
  • Knife/Soap cutter
  • 1 lb. goat’s milk melt-&-pour soap base
  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • 20 drops clove essential oil

You will want to grab your small bowl, and mix together the oats, cranberries, and cinnamon. Spread the mixture onto the bottom of a silicone soap mold with just enough to cover in one layer; set aside.

Cut the goat’s milk melt-and-pour soap base into cubes and place into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 30 seconds. Continue to microwave at 10-second intervals, stirring in between, until the soap has melted.

Quickly, stir in the clove essential oil and pour into the prepared soap mold. Finish with a pinch of cinnamon, if desired. Let the molds sit at room temperature for 40 minutes to 1 hour. Once hardened, turn the mold upside down and gently push the bottom of each soap mold to release.

There are some extra tips and tricks that I want to be sure to let you know just from previous experience. After you have poured the goat’s milk melt-and-pour soap base into the soap molds, be sure to have a spray bottle with some alcohol in it. Spray lightly, to ensure that all the bubbles disappear.

This recipe provided only yields 4 bars of soaps depending on the size of your soap molds. I was able to get 6 bars with this recipe with the oval soap molds. Most of the molds were purchased off amazon. With Valentine’s Day approaching we also made some chocolate cocoa oatmeal bars! Is it wrong if we want to eat the bar of soap? I will say, I only use these on my body when showering and I can tell how much my skin is left filling moisturized afterwards.

These soaps make great gifts, and all are naturally made with fresh ingredients that can be found in your kitchen. The only things that we had to buy were the goat’s milk melt-and-pour soap base as well as the essential oils. The goat’s milk that we used was purchased off of Brambleberry as well as the essential oils.

Messes matter. As a mom, I sometimes get caught up in the moment when Julian is covered in dirt, spills milk, gets paint everywhere except the canvas ,and has play dough balls on the floor. As a mom, I should be so glad that my son does not have sensory issues. He loves getting down and dirty. The more mess, the better. Today’s project allowed Julian to explore his creativity and make something of his own. So let your kids get messy, actually go ahead and make the mess with them! Make a memory out of the moment and if anything you will end up with some funny pictures and laughs for a lifetime.
